Antibiotics after bladder botox may cut infection risk
NCT ID NCT04791579
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether taking a short course of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) after Botox injections into the bladder can reduce the chance of urinary tract infections. About 160 adults with neurogenic overactive bladder (due to conditions like multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury) will be randomly assigned to receive either antibiotics or a placebo. The goal is to see if this simple step can make a common procedure safer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple way to prevent bladder infections after Botox injections, improving safety and reducing antibiotic overuse.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small Phase 2 trial, so results may not apply to everyone. Ciprofloxacin can cause side effects like nausea, and overuse may contribute to antibiotic resistance.
