Could a simple blood test help understand hair loss?

NCT ID NCT07499713

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This observational study examines whether certain blood markers (VEGF-A and VCAM-1) are linked to nailfold capillary changes in people with alopecia areata. Researchers will compare 90 participants (patients with acute or chronic alopecia areata and healthy volunteers) using blood tests, nailfold microscopy, and scalp imaging. The goal is to better understand the role of blood vessels and inflammation in this hair loss condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could point toward new ways to monitor or classify alopecia areata based on blood markers and capillary changes.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 90 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It aims to understand the disease, not to test a treatment.
