New hope for Hard-to-Treat lung cancer: drug combo may make surgery possible

NCT ID NCT07573696

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether giving alectinib (a targeted pill) along with standard chemotherapy can shrink unresectable stage III ALK-positive lung cancer enough to allow surgery or radiation. About 50 people who have not had prior treatment will receive three cycles of the combination. If the tumor shrinks enough, they may have surgery or radiation, followed by more alectinib. The goal is to see if this strategy improves long-term cancer control.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

alectinib (a targeted cancer drug) plus platinum-based chemotherapy

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could shrink tumors enough to allow surgery or radiation, potentially improving long-term control of stage III ALK-positive lung cancer.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 50 people, so results may not apply broadly. The combination may cause significant side effects, and not all participants will become eligible for local treatment.
