New injections aim to quiet phantom limb pain

NCT ID NCT07443553

First seen Mar 02, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests two treatments for pain after amputation. For people with leg amputations, doctors will inject alcohol near painful nerve endings (neuromas) to block pain signals. For those with arm amputations, a high-dose capsaicin injection will be used instead, to avoid harming nerves needed for prosthetics. The goal is to reduce phantom limb pain and stump pain. About 120 adults with long-lasting pain will take part.
