Scientists scan brains to see why some drinkers respond differently to medication

NCT ID NCT02639273

Summary

This small, completed study aimed to understand how a medication called nalmefene affects the brain's response to alcohol cues and drinking behavior in heavy drinkers. It also tested whether a specific gene variation (OPRM1) changes how people respond to the medication. Thirteen healthy heavy drinkers received the medication or a placebo, had brain scans, and participated in controlled alcohol sessions to measure their reactions.
