Can ultrasound predict a tough intubation? new study aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06925009

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study is testing whether ultrasound measurements of the neck, combined with machine learning, can predict when a breathing tube will be hard to place using a video laryngoscope. Researchers will collect data from 280 adults having planned surgery. The goal is to improve preparation and safety, not to test a new treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a tool that helps doctors predict difficult intubations more accurately, potentially reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The findings may not apply to all patients or settings, and the prediction model may not be accurate enough for routine use.
