AI and telemedicine could help nursing homes in doctor shortages
NCT ID NCT04679181
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed pilot study looked at whether nursing home staff in areas with few doctors would accept using artificial intelligence and telemedicine to help care for elderly residents. The study involved 137 participants aged 65 and older living in nursing homes located in medical deserts. The goal was to measure how often nurses used the AI/telemedicine system instead of usual care, and to compare delays in getting medical advice and rates of unplanned hospitalizations.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
telemedicine and artificial intelligence
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that AI and telemedicine are practical tools to help nursing homes in remote areas get faster medical advice.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study, so results may not apply to all nursing homes. It only measures acceptability, not whether it improves health outcomes.
