Summary

Researchers are comparing two versions of a free WhatsApp chatbot that answers pregnancy questions for women in India. One version replies with prepared answers, while the other uses generative AI to write responses based on reviewed maternal health materials and to flag possible emergencies. About 2,500 pregnant women in three Indian states join the study and are assigned at random to one version. The study tracks how often women use the chatbot, how useful they find it, how they decide when to seek care, and whether they attend prenatal visits.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
a WhatsApp pregnancy chatbot that uses generative AI to answer questions
What this could lead to
If the AI version keeps women more engaged and helps them seek care at the right time, it could offer a low-cost way to support pregnant women in places with limited health services.
What could go wrong
The AI may give unhelpful or confusing answers, and women may not use either chatbot much. The study measures engagement and behavior, not pregnancy outcomes, so any benefit to health remains uncertain.
