AI reads chest X-Rays to predict lung cancer risk
NCT ID NCT05817110
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing an artificial intelligence (AI) program called qXR that analyzes chest X-rays to give a lung nodule malignancy score — a number that indicates how likely a lung nodule is to be cancer. Researchers will compare the AI's score to the results of CT scans and radiologist reviews in about 712 adults aged 35 and older who have a lung nodule found on X-ray. The goal is to see if the AI can reliably tell high-risk from low-risk nodules, which could help doctors decide who needs a CT scan and who can safely wait.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI software (qXR) that analyzes chest X-rays to give a lung nodule malignancy score
What this could lead to
If successful, this AI tool could help doctors quickly identify which lung nodules need further testing, potentially catching lung cancer earlier and reducing unnecessary CT scans.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The AI may not be accurate enough in real-world settings, and results may not apply to all populations or healthcare systems.
