AI could prevent bile duct injuries in gallbladder surgery
NCT ID NCT07158372
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests an AI system that analyzes videos from gallbladder removal surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) to label important structures in real time. The goal is to help surgeons avoid accidentally damaging the bile duct, a serious complication. Researchers will collect surgery videos from 200 adults and measure how accurately the AI identifies key anatomy.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-assisted intraoperative anatomy analysis
What this could lead to
If successful, this AI tool could help surgeons avoid accidental bile duct injuries during gallbladder removal, making the procedure safer.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study focused on algorithm accuracy, not patient outcomes. The AI may not work well in all surgical settings or video qualities.
