AI diet coach aims to ease bowel distress after rectal cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT07637565

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an artificial intelligence-based dietary care app can reduce distress from bowel changes and improve quality of life in rectal cancer patients who have had anal-preserving surgery. One hundred participants will be randomly assigned to either standard dietary education or the same education plus the app for six months. The app uses a large language model for communication and AI to analyze meals from a database of over 100,000 dishes. Researchers will measure bowel function and quality of life at one, three, and six months after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Artificial intelligence-based dietary care system application

What this could lead to

If successful, this app could provide a practical, non-drug way to manage bowel symptoms and improve daily life for rectal cancer survivors.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The app requires internet and smartphone access, which may limit use.
