AI boosts eye Doctors' accuracy in reading retinal scans?

NCT ID NCT07651943

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether artificial intelligence (AI) can help doctors detect retinal diseases from ultra-widefield eye images. 462 images were read by four eye doctors with different experience levels, both with and without AI assistance. The goal was to see if AI improves accuracy and agreement among doctors.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

AI-assisted interpretation software

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that AI helps doctors spot retinal problems more accurately, potentially leading to better eye disease screening.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 4 doctors and 462 images. The AI only provides probabilities, not diagnoses, and results may not apply to all clinics or populations.
