AI tool aims to sharpen esophageal cancer staging

NCT ID NCT07251114

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests an artificial intelligence system that assists doctors in determining how deep early esophageal cancer has spread, using endoscopic ultrasound images. The goal is to improve the accuracy of preoperative staging, which helps guide treatment decisions. Researchers will enroll 200 participants and compare the AI-assisted grading with actual pathology results after surgery. The study also tracks survival and cancer progression over three years.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Artificial intelligence system (device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this AI tool could help doctors more accurately stage early esophageal cancer, leading to better treatment choices and potentially improved survival rates.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with 200 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The AI system may not always match the accuracy of standard pathology, and its impact on long-term outcomes is still unknown.
