Could an asthma drug stop dangerous fluid buildup in lungs at high altitude?

NCT ID NCT06040268

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tests whether the asthma drug Advair HFA can prevent high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), a condition where fluid fills the lungs at high altitudes, causing breathing difficulty. Researchers will give the drug or a placebo to 60 healthy and HAPE-prone adults and measure their exercise performance and lung function in a simulated high-altitude environment. The goal is to see if the drug can safely prevent HAPE and improve oxygen use during exercise.
