Stem cells could offer new hope for severe eczema sufferers
NCT ID NCT04137562
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests whether a stem cell therapy called ADSTEM can safely and effectively treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema). About 118 adults with long-lasting eczema that hasn't responded well to standard creams will receive either ADSTEM stem cells or a placebo via IV infusion. Researchers will track how many patients see at least a 50% improvement in their eczema symptoms over 16 weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ADSTEM stem cells (mesenchymal stem cells) given by IV infusion
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a new treatment option that helps control moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis with fewer side effects than current therapies.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 118 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is still experimental, and its long-term safety and effectiveness are not yet proven.
