Heart surgery boost: could adenosine be the key to better recovery?
NCT ID NCT07426237
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding adenosine to the standard heart-protecting solution used during bypass surgery helps the heart recover better. Sixty adults having elective valve or bypass surgery will receive either adenosine or a placebo. Researchers will measure heart function, heart damage markers, and the need for supportive drugs after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Adenosine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a simple, low-cost way to better protect the heart during open-heart surgery, potentially reducing complications and speeding recovery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (60 participants) testing a single dose. The benefit may be small or not seen at all, and there is a risk of side effects like arrhythmias.
