Oxford pioneers 'Smart' brain stimulator that adjusts to patient movements

NCT ID NCT05197816

Summary

This small Oxford study tested a new 'adaptive' deep brain stimulation device in 3 patients with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a severe neurodegenerative disease. The device automatically adjusts stimulation based on whether patients are lying down or standing up, aiming to better control blood pressure drops, walking difficulties, and bladder problems. Researchers wanted to see if this personalized approach could improve quality of life for people with this challenging condition.
