New stroke clot removal technique could boost recovery rates
NCT ID NCT02523261
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ways to remove large blood clots from the brain during a stroke: direct aspiration (ADAPT) and using a stent retriever. About 381 adults with stroke caused by a blocked artery in the front part of the brain took part. The goal is to see which method clears the blockage more completely and safely, potentially improving patients' recovery and reducing long-term disability.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- direct aspiration procedure (ADAPT) and stent retriever procedure
- What this could lead to
- If ADAPT proves superior, it could become the preferred first-line technique for removing large clots in stroke patients, leading to better recovery and less disability.
- What could go wrong
- This is a completed study, but results may not apply to all stroke types or settings. The techniques are invasive and carry risks like vessel damage or bleeding.
