Common heartburn drugs put to test in liver disease care

NCT ID NCT07248722

Summary

This study aims to settle a medical debate about whether patients with advanced liver disease (cirrhosis) should routinely take acid-suppression drugs after a preventive procedure for swollen veins in their esophagus. Researchers will enroll 210 patients and randomly assign half to take the drugs and half not to take them, then compare rates of bleeding, side effects, and death over six weeks. The goal is to provide clearer guidance on whether the potential benefit of preventing bleeding outweighs the possible risks of infection or other complications from the acid drugs.
