Timing of white reaction may spot esophageal cancer early

NCT ID NCT01618643

First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated May 09, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tested a new way to detect cancer in people with Barrett's esophagus, a condition that can lead to esophageal cancer. Doctors sprayed a weak vinegar solution on the esophagus and measured how long the tissue stayed white. They found that cancerous or pre-cancerous tissue turned white for a different length of time than healthy tissue. The goal was to see if this timing could help doctors tell the difference between harmless changes and dangerous cancer, without needing a biopsy. 197 adults took part, and the results could lead to a faster, simpler way to diagnose high-risk changes.
