First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study tested two different approaches to treat persistent atrial fibrillation (a type of irregular heartbeat) using a procedure called catheter ablation. 480 adults who had not had success with medication were randomly assigned to either stop the irregular rhythm during the procedure or use a standard preset approach followed by an electric shock. The goal was to see which method better prevented the return of irregular heart rhythms over 12 months.
