Scientists probe hidden heart risks in 9/11 heroes decades after dust exposure

NCT ID NCT05215171

Summary

This study aims to understand how exposure to dust and particles from the World Trade Center collapse affects the long-term heart and lung health of FDNY firefighters who were first responders. Researchers will compare 100 firefighters with breathing problems to those without, measuring specific proteins and markers in their blood and breath. The goal is to learn how the exposure causes damage and identify early signs of future heart or lung disease to potentially guide future care.
