Can a chemo drug erase ugly eye scars?
NCT ID NCT07397520
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This completed Phase 4 trial tested whether injecting 5-fluorouracil directly into raised facial scars around the eyes could make them less noticeable. Seven adults with scars from injury or cosmetic surgery received the treatment. The study used a standard scar scale to measure changes in color, texture, and size.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
5-fluorouracil
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-surgical way to improve the appearance of raised facial scars around the eyes.
What could go wrong
This was a very small study (7 people) with no control group, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment involves injections and may cause side effects like pain or irritation.
