3D maps could sharpen colon cancer surgery

NCT ID NCT07528937

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 3D computer model, made from a standard CT scan, helps surgeons better plan operations for locally advanced colon cancer. About 168 adults with stage cT3 or cT4 colon cancer will be randomly assigned to have surgery planned with or without the 3D model. The main goal is to see if the 3D model leads to more complete tumor removals (R0 resection) and fewer complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

3D reconstruction (diagnostic imaging test)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make colon cancer surgery more precise, helping surgeons remove tumors completely and potentially improving patient outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with only 168 participants, and the 3D model may not always be more accurate than standard CT scans. It is not a treatment itself.
