3D printed retainers could beat Old-School wires in new trial
NCT ID NCT07552155
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares a new 3D printed resin retainer to the standard wire retainer used after braces. Sixty-four patients who finished orthodontic treatment will get one of the two types. The main goal is to see which type breaks less often and takes less time for the dentist to put in.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
3D printed resin fixed retainer (device) and conventional fixed bonded retainer (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that 3D printed retainers are more reliable and faster to place than traditional ones, improving orthodontic care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 64 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The 3D printed material might have unknown long-term durability or safety issues.
