3D-Printed retainers take on traditional wires in new study
NCT ID NCT07538869
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compared custom 3D-printed metal fixed retainers to conventional wire retainers in 64 people who had finished orthodontic treatment. The main goal was to see how often the retainers came loose (bond failure) and how long they took to place. The 3D-printed retainers are designed from digital scans for a precise fit, but long-term evidence is still limited.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
3D-printed metal fixed retainer (device)
What this could lead to
If successful, 3D-printed retainers could offer a more precise fit and potentially fewer bond failures than traditional wire retainers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 64 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Long-term data is still limited.
