3D printing vs milling: which dental filling lasts longer?

NCT ID NCT07195201

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study will compare two ways of making onlay restorations (a type of dental filling for back teeth): 3D printing and CAD/CAM milling. Twenty-nine adults will receive one onlay made by each method on opposite sides of their mouth. Researchers will check how well they hold up over 18 months, looking at fit, appearance, and any side effects.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

dental onlay restoration (3D printed resin or CAD/CAM milled ceramic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that 3D printed onlays are as good as or better than milled ones, offering a more affordable or faster option for dental restorations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 29 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Both methods are already used in dentistry, so no major breakthrough is expected.
