3D-Printed foot could change lives of amputees

NCT ID NCT06938087

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested a new 3D-printed prosthetic foot designed to store and release energy, like a natural foot. Three people with below-knee amputation tried it during walking, stairs, and ramps. The goal was to see if it is safe and works as well as current carbon-fiber prosthetics.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

3D-printed prosthetic foot

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to more affordable, customized prosthetic feet that perform as well as current carbon-fiber models.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 3 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The 3D-printed foot may break or cause discomfort.
