Shorter antibiotic course for diabetic foot infection tested – but trial never started
NCT ID NCT05074147
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study aimed to see if a 3-week course of antibiotics works as well as a 6-week course for treating bone infections in the feet of people with diabetes. The trial planned to include adults with diabetes and a forefoot bone infection treated without surgery. However, the study was withdrawn before enrolling any participants, so no results are available.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
antibiotics (rifampin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, fusidic acid, teicoplanin, ceftazidime, trimethoprim)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a shorter 3-week antibiotic course works as well as 6 weeks for diabetic foot bone infections, reducing side effects and treatment burden.
What could go wrong
The trial was withdrawn before any patients enrolled, so no results are available. It is unclear if shorter treatment is truly effective or safe.
