New scan could spot prostate cancer that hides from standard tests
NCT ID NCT06062745
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early study tests whether a special PET scan using 18F-fluciclovine can find prostate cancer that doesn't show up well on standard PSMA scans. The study will include 30 men with advanced prostate cancer that either has low PSMA levels or has changed into a more aggressive neuroendocrine type. Researchers will compare the number of cancer spots seen on this new scan to those seen on standard scans to see if it can better detect hard-to-find disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
18F-fluciclovine (a radioactive tracer used in PET scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve detection of aggressive prostate cancers that are missed by current PSMA-PET scans, helping guide better treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a very early pilot study with only 30 participants. It is testing imaging, not treatment, so it won't directly improve outcomes. The tracer may not reliably distinguish cancer types.
