Lipoic acid synthetase deficiency
MONDO:0013762Lipoic acid synthetase deficiency is a rare condition that affects the mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny structures found in almost every cell of the body. They are responsible for creating most of the energy necessary to sustain life and support growth. People affected by this condition generally experience early-onset lactic acidosis, severe encephalopathy, seizures, poor growth, hypotonia, and developmental delay. It is caused by changes (mutations) in the LIAS gene and it is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Treatment is based on the signs and symptoms present in each person.
Also known as: HGCLAS, PDHLD, hyperglycinemia, lactic acidosis, and seizures, pyruvate dehydrogenase lipoic acid synthetase deficiency

MRI scans could unlock secrets of rare muscle disease
Knowledge-focused By invitation onlyThis study uses special MRI scans to measure how well muscles produce energy in people with mitochondrial disease. Researchers hope to learn more about the condition and develop a new tool to help diagnose and track it. The study involves 230 participants aged 7 to 75 with suspec…

Massive gene hunt launched for mysterious mitochondrial diseases
Knowledge-focused By invitation onlyThis study aims to discover new genetic mutations that cause mitochondrial disorders by analyzing tissue samples from up to 6,900 participants. It includes people with suspected or known mitochondrial diseases, such as MELAS or Leigh's Disease, who lack a genetic diagnosis. The r…
