Could a 72-Hour knee brace be the key to less pain after replacement?

NCT ID NCT07511842

First seen Apr 16, 2026

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether wearing a knee extension brace for the first 72 hours after total knee replacement can reduce pain and improve recovery. About 106 adults having knee replacement will be randomly assigned to either wear the brace or receive standard care with early movement. The main goal is to see if a larger trial is possible, but researchers will also measure pain, function, and complications.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Knee extension brace (Zimmer-type)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a simple, low-cost way to reduce pain and improve recovery after knee replacement surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study testing feasibility, not a proven treatment. The brace may not reduce pain, could cause discomfort, or increase complication risks like blood clots.

Conditions
