Could a probiotic boost a cancer drug? new trial tests the combo

NCT ID NCT07578025

First seen May 19, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests whether adding a probiotic capsule (MO-03) to the drug zanzalintinib can help treat metastatic kidney cancer that has worsened after immunotherapy. About 34 adults with advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma will receive both treatments. The goal is to see if the combination shrinks tumors or slows cancer growth.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

zanzalintinib (a targeted drug) and MO-03 (a probiotic capsule)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with advanced kidney cancer that has stopped responding to immunotherapy.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 34 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination may not work better than existing treatments, and side effects are unknown.
