Summary

Researchers are testing whether adding immersive virtual reality to reminiscence therapy helps older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment more than traditional reminiscence therapy or usual care. Participants attend day-care centres and take part in 12 sessions over six weeks. The study measures changes in thinking, mood, behavioural symptoms, and quality of life.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
immersive virtual reality-assisted reminiscence therapy
What this could lead to
If it helps, this could offer day-care centres a way to make reminiscence therapy more engaging and possibly more effective for older adults with cognitive impairment.
What could go wrong
The trial is small and early, so any benefits may be modest or fade. Virtual reality headsets can also cause discomfort or confusion in some older adults.
