Can helping others cure loneliness? new study tests kindness as medicine
NCT ID NCT06510439
Summary
This study is testing whether a 6-month program focused on volunteering, acts of kindness, and practicing gratitude can reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation in adults with serious mental illnesses like depression or schizophrenia. 120 participants in Philadelphia will be randomly assigned to either receive weekly coaching to help them volunteer and build social connections, or to receive general weekly check-ins. The goal is to see if helping others and feeling needed improves participants' social well-being and mental health.
