First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tested a short virtual reality program called SHINE-VR for 6 adolescents aged 12-17 who had experienced sexual abuse and felt trauma-related shame. The program included three VR sessions focused on psychoeducation and sharing feelings in a virtual group. Researchers measured changes in shame, self-compassion, and PTSD symptoms. The goal was to see if VR could help teens open up about shame and improve their recovery.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to help teens overcome shame after sexual abuse, making PTSD treatment more effective.
