Can a buddy system save Veterans' lives? new trial aims to prevent suicide after service

NCT ID NCT07356492

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tests whether connecting high-risk veterans leaving the military with trained peer sponsors and mental health services can ease their return to civilian life and reduce suicide risk. About 2,700 veterans from four Army bases will be randomly assigned to usual transition, peer sponsorship alone, or peer sponsorship plus stepped VA care. The goal is to see if extra support during the first year after service improves reintegration, mental health, and connection to care.
