First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study tests whether the antiviral drug valganciclovir can safely reduce CMV virus levels in the blood of people with advanced HIV (CD4 count 100 or less). About 130 adults and adolescents in South Africa and Uganda will receive either the drug or a placebo daily for 4 weeks, alongside standard HIV care. The goal is to see if treating CMV can lower the high death rate in this vulnerable group.
