New ultrasound view may improve fluid management in heart surgery

NCT ID NCT07305051

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study compares two ways of using ultrasound to measure the inferior vena cava, a large vein that shows how much fluid is in the body. The standard method uses a view below the breastbone, but this can be hard in patients who are obese or have surgical dressings. The new method uses the liver as a window and may be easier. About 283 adults scheduled for heart surgery will have a quick, painless ultrasound before surgery. This is an observational study with no treatment, and results may help doctors better manage fluids during and after surgery.
