A peek inside the skull through the eye: ultrasound may spot life-threatening pressure
NCT ID NCT07719842
First seen Jul 22, 2026 · Last updated Jul 23, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This multicenter trial tests whether three ultrasound measurements of the eye — the optic nerve sheath diameter, optic disc elevation, and the crescent sign — can accurately identify increased intracranial pressure. Researchers will compare these bedside ultrasound findings with the results of cranial CT or MRI scans in adults coming to the emergency department with symptoms of possible brain pressure. If the ultrasound signs prove reliable, they could offer a faster, radiation-free way to screen for this dangerous condition.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bedside ultrasound measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter, optic disc elevation, and the crescent sign
- What this could lead to
- If accurate, this quick bedside test could help doctors spot dangerously high pressure inside the skull without waiting for a CT or MRI scan.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small early study with only 10 participants. The ultrasound signs may not prove accurate enough to replace standard imaging.
