Ultrasound test may help doctors spot tough airways before surgery
NCT ID NCT07609147
First seen Jun 08, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study will check if a quick ultrasound measurement of the skin-to-epiglottis distance in the neck can help predict when placing a breathing tube will be difficult. Researchers will measure this distance in 300 adult patients before surgery and compare it to standard airway checks. The goal is to find a simple, non-invasive way to prepare for challenging intubations.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple, non-invasive way to predict difficult airways before intubation, potentially improving patient safety.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The measurement may not reliably predict difficult airways in all patients, and results may not change clinical practice.
