Home tongue workout may reduce choking risk in seniors

NCT ID NCT07203508

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study tested a simple, home-based tongue exercise (pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth) in 17 older adults with swallowing problems. The goal was to see if it could strengthen swallowing muscles and reduce the risk of food or liquid entering the airway. Participants did the exercise at home for 8 weeks, and researchers measured changes in muscle activity and swallowing safety compared to standard therapy.
