New laser study breaks down kidney stone treatment success
NCT ID NCT07153978
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looked at how well a thulium fiber laser breaks up large kidney stones (over 1000 mm³) during a minimally invasive procedure called retrograde intrarenal surgery. Researchers tracked 81 patients to see what factors, like stone density, affect whether all fragments are cleared. The goal is to help doctors choose the best treatment approach for each patient.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Thulium fiber laser (TFL) lithotripsy device
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors better predict which patients with large kidney stones will benefit most from thulium laser treatment, improving stone clearance and reducing repeat procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center study with no control group, so results may not apply to all patients. The laser itself is already in use, so this trial mainly refines knowledge rather than proving a new breakthrough.
