Summary

This study tests whether giving NYC taxi drivers a pedometer (Fitbit) along with text message reminders and support from their social network can help them walk more each day. Participants are divided into four groups: some get only the pedometer and health fair, others add text messages, social support, or both. The goal is to see which combination boosts daily step counts and encourages a healthier lifestyle.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
pedometer (Fitbit) with text messaging and social network support
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could help sedentary workers increase physical activity and reduce health risks.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study in a specific group (male NYC taxi drivers), so results may not apply to others. The intervention is low-risk but may not produce lasting changes.
