Heart surgery fluid forecast: vein collapse test could save lives

NCT ID NCT06645327

First seen May 13, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a simple ultrasound measurement of the superior vena cava (a large vein near the heart) can help doctors decide if a patient needs more fluids during coronary artery bypass surgery. About 120 adults having planned bypass surgery will be enrolled. Researchers will tilt the operating table to mimic giving fluids and measure how the vein responds, comparing it to standard heart output readings. The goal is to find a reliable cutoff value that predicts fluid needs, potentially improving care and reducing complications.
