New combo attack on breast cancer brain tumors shows promise in early trial
NCT ID NCT04923542
First seen Nov 15, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 34 times
Summary
This study is for people with a common type of breast cancer (HR+/HER2-) that has spread to the brain. It tests a drug called abemaciclib (Verzenio) given along with precise, high-dose radiation (stereotactic radiosurgery). The goal is to see if this combination can better control brain tumors and delay their growth. About 31 participants will receive both treatments, and researchers will track how long the brain tumors stay under control.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Abemaciclib (Verzenio) and stereotactic radiosurgery
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could offer a new way to control brain metastases in HR+/HER2- breast cancer, potentially delaying progression and improving outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase, single-arm study with only 31 participants. It may not show a clear benefit, and side effects from combining radiation with abemaciclib are not yet fully known.
