Can the dirt under our feet shape the bacteria in our gut?
NCT ID NCT07742319
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study asks whether the diversity of microbes in soil can influence the bacteria living in the human gut. Ten healthy adults will drink vegetable smoothies made from crops grown in either low- or high-microbial diversity soil for one week each. Researchers will check if live bacteria from the smoothies appear in stool samples and whether the gut microbiome changes. The main goal is to test whether the study procedures work smoothly before a larger investigation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Vegetable smoothies made from crops grown in either low- or high-microbial diversity soil
- What this could lead to
- If this pilot works, it could pave the way for larger studies exploring whether soil health can influence human gut health.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study focused on feasibility, not on proving health effects. Results may not show a clear link, and the findings may not apply broadly.
