New MRI technique could pinpoint seizure source without needles
NCT ID NCT02304029
First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tested whether a new type of MRI that measures sodium levels in the brain can help locate the area causing seizures in people with epilepsy that doesn't respond to medication. 78 patients who were already scheduled for epilepsy surgery had this scan. The goal was to see if the sodium MRI could find the problem area as accurately as the current standard method, which sometimes requires invasive brain recordings. If successful, this could lead to a safer, cheaper way to plan epilepsy surgery.
