Narcolepsy's hidden toll: study probes social brain in sleep disorders

NCT ID NCT05773872

First seen May 31, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study looks at how narcolepsy (types 1 and 2) and idiopathic hypersomnia affect social cognition—skills like recognizing emotions and making decisions. Researchers will give 75 adults several questionnaires to measure attention, impulse control, empathy, and emotion recognition. The goal is to better understand these social challenges so that future treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, can be tailored to help.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could point toward better support and therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy, to improve social functioning in people with narcolepsy.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study with only 75 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It measures questionnaires, not direct treatment outcomes, so it won't lead to a new drug or cure.
