Smart mat could save diabetic feet from ulcers and amputations

NCT ID NCT05728411

First seen Nov 01, 2025

Summary

This study tests a smart mat that people with diabetes stand on at home to check foot temperature. Hot spots can signal early damage, so the mat sends data to health coaches who alert the care team. The goal is to prevent foot ulcers and amputations, especially in Black and rural Veterans who are at higher risk. The trial will enroll 800 Veterans and follow them for up to 24 months.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study in a specific VA population, so results may not apply to everyone. The mat may not detect all problems, and some people might find it hard to use.
